With Tropical Storm Fay on the map and threatening to become a hurricane before landfall on August 19th, property insurers stopped writing new policies in Florida. Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, the state sponsored insurer of last resort and currently Florida’s largest property insurer, stopped taking new policies or allowing changes to existing ones at 5 a.m. on Sunday August 17, 2008 when it became clear that Florida was in Fay’s path. State Farm and Allstate also temporarily suspended writing new Florida business. The primary impact of the temporary halt in new policies was to delay home closings until after the storm passed.
