On a recent campaign trip to Florida, Republican presidential nominee John McCain restated his opposition to the national “Cat Fund” bill that passed the U.S. House last year and was sponsored by Palm Beach County Democratic Congressmen. Ron Klein and Tim Mahoney. McCain did say that he would consider a “Gulf States Compact” or other regional risk pool alternative to a national catastrophe insurance fund. McCain and Republican U.S. Senator Mel Martinez, who was riding with McCain, said the Klein-Mahoney bill had no chance of passing in the Senate. McCain stated:
“For somebody to come to Florida and say that [a national cat fund] is the plan we will have is either misleading or misinformed. So we’ve got to sit down, Republicans and Democrats and all of the states that are involved, and work out a risk pool.”
