Amanda Crawford was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in January 2026 to serve as the new commissioner of insurance (CIO) for the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), officially stepping into the role on February 3. She succeeds Cassie Brown, who retired after leading TDI for four years.

Crawford brings more than 24 years of public service experience in Texas state government. Before this appointment, she served as the executive director of the Texas Department of Information Resources and the state’s chief information officer since 2019, where she guided statewide technology efforts and managed a portfolio with an annual fiscal profile exceeding $6 billion. As state CIO, she served on Texas’s artificial intelligence advisory council, and has emphasized that AI is driving stronger data governance across agencies and enabling new capabilities through data sharing. Earlier in her career, she spent 17 years at the Office of the Attorney General, rising to general counsel and deputy attorney general for administration.

Crawford’s term runs until February 1, 2027.
