On November 17, 2009, a bill was introduced in the United States House of Representatives that would ban insurance companies from canceling, or refusing to renew, the policies of homeowners as the result of Chinese manufactured drywall in the home.  United States Representative Charlie Melancon (D-La.) introduced the bill, entitled “The Drywall Victims Insurance Protection Act.”

The bill introduced Tuesday would bar insurers from denying coverage to homes “based on the presence, or possibility of presence, in the structure” of Chinese manufactured drywall. The bill would further ban insurers from changing rates or altering the amount of coverage based on problems stemming from the drywall, and would protect homeowners’ rights to sue insurance companies that have dropped their coverage owing to the presence of Chinese manufactured drywall.
