Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer signed legislation this past month that requires annual mailings to New York State homeowners on how to obtain flood insurance coverage with the National Flood Insurance Program (“NFIP”).  The reason for this change is because New York State homeowners previously received information regarding flood insurance only once, when they bought a homeowner’s insurance policy, and proponents of the law felt the issue of flood insurance was often overlooked.  Now, homeowners in New York will receive annual mailings so they are fully apprised of the damage flooding can cause to their property and determine whether they should purchase additional flood insurance.
