The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published research that highlights the important role that insurance can play in meeting financial commitments when households lose a regular income.

The research, commissioned by the ABI, showed a large proportion of people have no contingency plans should their household’s primary income decline due to unemployment, long term illness or loss of life. It also highlighted the benefits an appropriate protection policy can bring during these difficulties, but stated that barriers to taking out insurance included affordability, confidence in the products being sold and the lack of neutral sources of advice.

The research and an ABI consumer factsheet on the different types of protection insurance can be found here.
