Effective today, the New York Department of Financial Services (‘DFS”) is headed by Acting Superintendent Shirin Emami. Ms. Emami, a Columbia Law School graduate, replaces Linda Lacewell. The new Governor, Kathy Hochul, will appoint a permanent Superintendent. The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.
Emami has been with the agency for 7 ½ years; her most recent position was Executive Deputy Superintendent – Banking Division. Prior to joining the DFS, Emami held positions in several banks in their respective legal departments.
The DFS was formed in 2011 by merger of the States’ Insurance and Banking Departments.
