This updates our May 17, 2013 blog post.

On June 3, 2013, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed into law HB 5072 (the “Bill”), restricting insurance companies and affiliated entities from influencing insureds into using specific automotive glass repair establishments.  The Bill strengthens pre-existing laws that prohibited requiring that insureds use specific shops.  The legislation places substantial restrictions on “steering” insureds towards glass repair shops by requiring insurers and their respective agents or administrators to inform an insured of its right to use a repair facility of its choosing “in the area” where such work can be performed.  Now that Connecticut has passed the Bill, it remains to be seen whether other states will follow suit.
