Under the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, which came into effect in 1972, it is compulsory for all employers to have insurance. Andrew Dismore, a Labour MP, has launched a Private Members’ Bill, the Employers’ Liability Insurance Bureau Bill 2008-09, seeking to introduce an employers’ liability insurance bureau which will pay out to claimants should the employer not have insurance or, more likely, that the insurance policy cannot be traced.
The bill received its first reading on 26 January 2009 and its second reading, although due on 13 March 2009, has been postponed until 16 October 2009.
