Bermuda Premier Ewart Brown of the Progressive Labour Party (“PLP”) has announced, through a video posted on YouTube, that Bermuda will hold its first general election since 2003. Currently, the PLP holds the majority of Parliament seats with 22, while the conservative United Bermuda Party (“UBP”) holds the remaining 14. The vote, scheduled for December 18, is an opportunity for either the PLP to solidify its control of Bermuda’s government or for the UBP to regain control for the first time since 1998. It also marks the first time the public will be able to voice whether it supports Dr. Brown as Premier, as the position was obtained through an internal party battle a year ago, rather than through a general election.
